5 Tips for the Bay of Islands

Another long weekend spent in picturesque New Zealand. And it contained all my favourite things – a road trip, good food, good wine, fresh air and amazing company.

I barely scraped the surface of the Bay of Islands but there are plenty of articles and websites that you can find with the must-see attractions.

Here are my personal 5 tips for a cracking long weekend:

1.       Stay in Russell at Robin’s Air BNB apartment

Perfect location, perfect size, great views – enough said? Air BNB is absolutely my preferred accommodation when I travel. “Belong anywhere” is their aim and Robin’s place in Russell made us feel right at home.

2.       Have the seafood chowder at Sally’s Restaurant

Located right on the waterfront in Russell, Sally’s is hands down best chowder I’ve had – easily beats San Francisco’s at Fisherman’s Bay. Add a glass of Sav Blanc at sunset and it’s pure bliss.

3.       Take a swim in Rainbow Falls

Mother Nature at her best

In case you were underestimating the romance factor of swimming in a fresh water pool with cascading waterfall, this one was a featured date on The Bachelor NZ 2015. Trust me, it’s worth the goosebumps.

4.       Check out the view at Flagstaff Hill

Sunset is ideal but the view will stun at any time

Hike up or drive (no judgement from me) but the panoramic view of the bay is unrivalled. Pack a picnic or just breathe in the serenity before heading out for dinner.

5.       Enjoy a late afternoon wine tasting at Omata Estate

Vineyards, ocean and sunshine

I’m a sucker for a vineyard view but the added bonus of the ocean breeze makes this place pretty special – throw in vino tasting and some late afternoon sun, and I’m a really happy girl.

Happy travelling!
With Love
